4 Tips to Making the Bathroom a Safe Place for the Elderly and Disabled

This may sound like a dilemma if taken at face value, but the bathroom, along with the kitchen, has the potential to be one of the most dangerous rooms in the house, especially for the elderly and disabled. Considering that the bathroom is a place where one tends to take care of business and maintain personal hygiene and therefore promotes health, it looks like a dilemma because it is necessary.

There are many elderly people who have had accidents in the bathroom either because they tripped slipped and fell or were met with scalding water temperatures. The thing is that these accidents can be prevented, only if one follows some helpful tips.

1. Simplify the Shower and Tub Design

Slipping and falling in the tub is not pleasant, especially for an elderly, they can suffer from crippling injuries. In such a case, it is better to modify the shower or tub area of the bathroom so that they do not have to climb into the tub.

Sunken tubs and walk in showers are the perfect way to counter this problem. But make sure not to go overboard with it. Going for design instead of functionality will defeat the purpose. Steps pose a slip and fall hazard and so is a curb where the walk in shower is located. You can also have a hire home care services for your elderly or disabled loved one so that they can bathe safely without having to worry about a slipping hazard

2. Sizing Up the Commode Right

Elderly or disabled may have problems with getting on the commode properly, either due to arthritis, osteoporosis or some other ailment. They may also have back, hip and other joint problems preventing them from getting rid of excrement. Moulded seats that raise the level of the commode from the usual 15-17 inches to something more comfortable for the elderly is a possible solution and is available at www.safetyandmobility.com.au. The additional railings will also help them with additional support to help them get up.

3. Don’t have Locked Doors

Locking doors will make things difficult even though the bathroom is meant to be a place where someone takes care of private business. In case your elderly or disabled loved one suffers from a fall or a chronic medical condition while in there, you will have no way to access them if the door is locked. They won’t be able to make it outside on their own either.

People with chronic problems and especially the elderly are prone to this. So it is important to have a way to mitigate the risk. Also have walk-in shower doors that open outward, this way, in the worst case scenario, you or another caregiver can access the person in question.

4. Grips and Rail Additions

Grips can also be a good way to ensure that the elderly or disabled don’t fall. You may also want something that helps them support their weight in case of a fall. Get customized railings that anchor well into the wall and allow the weight of an elderly or disabled to be supported.

Doing Business with a Company You Can Trust

The success of your business depends in part on the other organizations and entities with which you partner. When they commit themselves to your success, they influence how well you can operate your company. You know that you can rely on them for the products and services for which you have partnered with them.

You can establish that element of trust by doing some research about the companies before you establish a connection with them. You can find partners that will provide critical inventory, pre owned ophthalmic equipment, linens, and other important supplies without fail by reading about their background stories first.

Length of Time in Business

New businesses have to get their starts in the industry somehow and somewhere. Even so, you may not want their startup efforts to come at your own business’s profits or success. You may actually prefer to do business with a company that has been in operation for several years if not decades.

The background story for the company gives you an idea of how long it has been in operation. You can get the peace of mind in knowing that it has the length of service and the experience in the industry to make it an efficient and reliable partner of your own business.

Company Mission

You also want to partner with a business that has a clear corporate mission that aligns with your own values and goals. Regardless of how long the business has actually been open, it needs to have a vision for not only its future but also the way that it does business with you and other industry partners today.

The background story is the place to start researching a business’s mission and goals for now and years in the future. You can make sure that your values will be taken seriously and your goals met without being compromised by your industry partners.

A company’s background story tells a lot about how reliable and committed it is to its corporate partners. You can read up on these details and put your worries to ease by making sure it has the experience and values you seek.

Three Issues Chiropractic Care Can Help With

You probably are not aware of what types of ailments chiropractic care can benefit. Whether you or a loved one is suffering from an ongoing injury or a recent sprain from an accident, chiropractic treatments may offer relief. Some people think that back pain is the only condition treated by a chiropractor, but that is incorrect because chiropractic care can be used to treat various conditions. These three conditions may be treated by your local chiropractic office.

Injury pain
Whether it’s a work injury or sports injury, you want to find relief using natural treatments. Physical therapy in Valrico FL can possibly help to loosen muscles that are impacted. Massage therapy is also another type of treatment used for injury pain. Getting regular chiropractic treatments after a sports injury can promote a quicker recovery and ultimately improve your performance.

Auto accidents
Depending on the severity of the auto accident, drivers can endure crippling pain from their injuries. Patients may experience the pain right after the accident or several days after the incident. Oftentimes, ligaments can be stretched, damaged or even torn. Various modes of healing can be used to treat the pain including mechanical traction, craniosacral techniques, physical therapy, massage therapy and lightforce laser therapy. These treatments are in addition to adjusting techniques.

Neck and shoulder pain
Loved ones of all ages can experience neck and should pain. When this occurs it can prevent you from performing normal day-to-day activities. Chiropractic treatments may help to alleviate neck and shoulder pain. The culprit of neck pain can be a herniated disc, bulging disc, muscle strain, pinched nerve or worn joints. Injuries can cause limited mobility and possibly lead to damages to the surrounding tissues or nerves.

When you or a loved one experiences pain related to a work or sport injury you probably did not think that your local chiropractor can offer relief. Most people are not sure which ailments are treated by a chiropractor. Essentially, consider seeing a chiropractor for these three ailments: injury pain, auto accident injuries, neck and should pain.

4 Safety Aspects to Using Ceiling Hoists for Patient Handling

The operation theatre is a congested place given what goes on there (life-saving). It is where the medical professionals need to be at their absolute best in order to save the life of their patients. They need all the help they can get, technological or otherwise. That’s where ceiling hoists come into play. They can help handle and transfer patients while keeping their safety and health in check.

What safety aspects should you be considering when you’re getting a ceiling hoist for your patients?

They Help Prevent Pressure Sores in Patients

There was a review back in 2009 that outlined how effective ceiling hoists were in reducing the risk of contracting musculoskeletal injuries in patients. Due to the time constraints inside an operation theatre, it often falls upon nurses and other staff to transfer the patient to the operating table and they have to do it quickly.

While it is their job to make sure that nothing happens to the health of the patients, it sometimes becomes unavoidable due to the stress and fatigue that the nurses have to endure. Patients often complain of pressure sores or sometimes even something worse like musculoskeletal pain when they are done with the operation and come back for a check-up.

When a ceiling hoist is used, it helps to reduce the stress on the patient when being transferred to the operation theatre and table. This results in diminishing post operation patient complaints regarding sores and ulcers that result from increased pressure when transferring them.

Eases the Pressure on Nurses and Other Staff

Nurses and nurses’ aides are also among the people who complain of back pain and other injuries. It’s not just the patients. And it’s about time that this pain isn’t just disregarded as part of the job. A way to help reduce this pain that comes with patient handling is to use ceiling hoists.

The ceiling hoists are much more appropriate to use because it reduces the amount of manual lifting that is done by the nurses and aides. The back pain and injuries that result from patient transfer and lifting causes absenteeism in the nursing staff. Most of the complaints that the staff bring in are related to back strain and back pain.

No Need to Worry About Infections

Some people may argue that there is significant risk if the ceiling hoist is above the patient at the time of surgery. This is not the case, as a full room covering system such as that from PatientHandling.com.au is used, there will be no railings or hoists above the patient during the surgery.

The ceiling hoist can be parked away from the sterile area as instructed by caregivers so that there is no threat of infection and post-operative complications.

Improving Practices for Greater Safety of Patients

The way to go about transferring and handling patients may have been different before and needs to be based on historical evidence in part. But that shouldn’t be the only determining factor. With the evidence and research supporting the use of ceiling hoists, it should be clear why it is beneficial to use them.

Radiology – All You Need to Know About it

You are being told by your doctor to get a radiology screening done and it freaked you out. This is a normal case when people are not aware of what radiology or a radiology scan is. Being unfamiliar with radiology and how it works is sure to freak you out as it sounds like a very difficult term. But, it is not as dangerous or serious as you may have thought. There can be many reasons your doctor prescribed a radiology scan to you. It can range for anything from mammography, ultrasounds, x-rays or other kinds of scans that help in improving your overall health.

If you are still confused about what a radiology scan is and what is done in a radiology department, insideradiology.com.au has listed here all you need to know about radiology.

What is Radiology?

Radiology, in simple terms, is a medical imaging that helps doctors in diagnosing the problem the patient is having. The body, in this process, is scanned with the help of machines. These images let doctors understand what is going on under the skin of the patient that cannot be seen with a naked eye.

Why Do You Need Radiology?

There can be many reasons you need radiology. The most common reason doctors refer you to a radiologist is to help in diagnosis. It might also be done as a preventive measure to make sure that the body is functioning normally and properly. Some scans are used to find out if the heart is working properly, while others like a mammogram, help in early diagnosis of breast cancer. Some scans are also done during pregnancy to ensure the fetus is developing normally or not. Regardless of the type of scan being conducted, it allows a deeper understanding of what is going on inside the body without having to cut it open.

Types of Radiology Scans

Here are the different types of radiology scans and their use.

X-Ray: These help in finding out any foreign objects or broken bones in the body.

Bone Density: It helps in finding out bone erosion and loss and is commonly done on patients of osteoporosis.

MRI: This scan helps in taking a detailed look at the internal structures of the body to find out any issues.

CT Scan: It is a combination of X-Rays and MRI which helps in taking a closer look at the bones, organs, blood vessels and soft tissues. It can also create 3D images.

Ultrasound: Using sound waves instead of radiations, it allows imaging the internal organs and finding out any abnormalities in them.

Echodiagrams: This uses sound waves to test for heart diseases.

Your doctor can prescribe you a radiology scan based on many different reasons for things that they might find intimidating or concerning. The scan is done in collaboration of your primary health care provider and a radiology specialist. These harmless imaging procedures can go a long way in helping doctors diagnose the problems their patients are facing.

Everything You Need to Know about Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells develop in prostrates, and multiply uncontrollably. This causes the disease to spread into nearby areas or even distant body parts depending on the severity.

Prostate cancer can either be low grade or high grade. In the former case, the disease grows slowly and the symptoms aren’t apparent in the early stages. Low grade cancer isn’t lethal. However high grade prostate cancer is fatal and spreads quickly through the body. It can only be treated and cure when managed appropriately.

Here are some key facts which you should know about prostate cancer.

The Organ

Prostate cancer initiates from your prostate, which is a part of male reproductive system. Resembling a walnut, this gland has a small size but it plays an important role in regulating your urine flow and semen production.

Survival Chances

Prostate cancer was the fourth most common cancer type in Australia in 2017. In 2018, 17,729 new cases of prostate cancer are expected to show up, which equal to around 23.8% of all new cases. But also keep in mind that the chances of survival are as high as 95%.

Early Detection

Some symptoms do exist for prostate cancer like urgent urination needs, discomfort when doing so, blood in the semen or urine and pain in the lower part of your body. But all these can also be symptoms of other diseases. So visit your doctor and take their advice if you experience any one of them.

Generally, treatment for prostate cancer is most effective if the disease is detected at an early stage.  The survival rate increases up to 99% in this case.

Diagnosis

Targetingcancer.com.au detects prostate cancer through a blood test or a digital rectal examination or DRE. The first of these tests shows if levels of a specific protein have increased. Accordingly, further investigation is carried out. Higher values don’t always mean that you may be suffering from prostate cancer. DRE involves the doctor assessing the size of your prostate and checking for abnormalities.

Biopsy is performed after the above two tests have been carried out.  Only then can your doctor confirm whether or not you’re suffering from prostate cancer.

Risk Factors

Generally one out of 7 men is diagnosed with prostate cancer. Common risk factors include increasing age, family history and even your ethnicity to a certain extent.

While increasing age does increase chances, it doesn’t mean that only old men are expected to suffer from prostate cancer. Younger men can also be diagnosed, and as per the numbers, 1 of 325 men will be diagnosed with this disease before they cross 50.

Risk Reduction

You can reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer if you lead a healthy lifestyle. Work out regularly, eat right, drink lots of water and keep a check on your weight. Also quit smoking and drinking.  In general, anything that you do to keep your heart healthy also reduces your risk of prostate cancer and helps you fight the disease.
