What Is A 12-Step Program?

The 12-Step program was created by Alcoholics Anonymous. While the program was initially created to be used exclusively by people who were addicted to alcohol, three-quarters of treatment centers in the United States today utilize adaptations of the original 12-Step program in their drug and alcohol rehabilitation curriculum. The 12-Step program was initially created as a guide for people who could not attend Alcoholics Anonymous, or AA, meetings, but it quickly became a representation and model for the program itself.

The 12-Step program philosophy is essentially a peer-to-peer support group where members can anonymously share their trials, tribulations, successes and thoughts in a judgment-free way. Many drug addiction rehab centers incorporate various facets of the 12-Step program into their curriculum because peer support is essential for sobriety. There are many additional offshoots of the original program, and there have been a vast number of self-help programs that have been born from the original 12-Step program.

What Are 12 Step Programs For Addiction Treatment?

If you are addicted to heroin, opioids or any other dangerous narcotics, the 12-Step program can also work to help you overcome your addictions and maintain your sobriety. If you are struggling with personal or professional issues, have ongoing family drama or have encountered a relapse, you can seek the love and support of your 12-Step group members to help you through trying times; they can help you regain focus, composure and control so that you can move forward in your life and work through your problems without abusing drugs and alcohol.

On the flip side of the coin, if you want to share your positive experiences, revelations, encouragement, details of a sobriety anniversary or a particular celebratory event, 12-Step programs are the perfect platform for touting your achievements, spreading love and support and gaining the confidence you need to continue on in your journey to sobriety. Nearly half of all active members of various 12-Step programs never touch drugs or alcohol again once they have become clean and sober. Flourishing involves having positive mental health, and most who are flourishing and thriving have a greater chance of experiencing long-term sobriety.

The 12-Step program gives members a safe platform where they can surrender their addictions and triggers, process their past and vow to move forward to create new goals and enjoy positive life experiences. It helps some people realize they have a problem with addiction, encourages them to seek help from outside sources, holds them accountable for the actions that led to their addictions, gives them an opportunity to practice restraint while building confidence and self-esteem, guides them to want to change their behaviors, teaches compassion for themselves and anyone they have hurt in the past and provides helpful tools that can be used throughout life for coping and thriving.

The 12-Steps Outlined: Broken Down In Easy Terms

1.) Admit that you are powerless to your addictions.
2.) Believe in any higher power or positive influence that can help you overcome your addictions.
3.) Turn all control over to a higher power.
4.) Take a personal inventory of your past actions.
5.) Profess your wrongdoings to the higher power, yourself and anyone you have hurt in the past.
6.) Await the blessings that a higher power will provide.
7.) Ask a higher power to help you overcome your shortcomings.
8.) Make a list of things you have done wrong and people you have wronged. Vow to make amends for those wrongdoings.
9.) Contact anyone you have hurt, unless contact will cause additional pain.
10.) Continue to hold yourself accountable, and admit when you are wrong.
11.) Seek connection to enlightenment through prayer and meditation regularly.
12.) Carry the message of the 12-Step program to any others who may be in need.

Some people are critics of the 12-Step curriculum because they do not like the idea of basing recovery on the idea that there is an inability to control the addiction without the program. These people prefer to rely on internal control and the inner work they have done through a regimented treatment center to avoid the triggers that lead to abusing drugs and alcohol. However, the vast majority of treatment centers utilize components of the 12-Step program because it works. The program encourages unity, support, love, self-acceptance, accountability, ownership and forgiveness. It is a comprehensive program for anyone with addictions, anyone in recovery and those who have been directly or indirectly impacted by a person with a drug or alcohol problem.

Medical Marijuana

One of the newest treatment methods to hit the market is something that seems to be highly controversial, despite science backing it up. This treatment method is medical marijuana and the use of both Illinois dispensaries and dispensaries in other places to get this legally into the hands of patients.

What is it used for?

Medical marijuana can be used for a variety of conditions, and more are being added as research support comes through. Overall, marijuana is known as being very relaxing. Naturally, this means that it will help in conditions where patients aren’t very relaxed. For example, patients struggling with extreme anxiety can benefit from this treatment, along with those diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In Parkinson’s disease, the person experiences tremors that can be calmed through marijuana. Lastly, conditions like depression and autism are also being treated with this in some states.

Ways to Consume it

There are several ways to consume marijuana and receive the healing effects from it. Many people opt to smoke or vape it. This sometimes replaces nicotine use, which offers additional benefits. Others decide to include it into edibles, such as with butter or lollipops. There is no wrong way to consume it as long as you are obtaining it legally from a medical dispensary.

As you can see, the use of Illinois dispensaries can be very beneficial for a lot of patients that don’t otherwise respond to more conventional treatment plans. There are conditions like PTSD and autism that can be highly individualized for the patient, and it makes sense that there is no one size fits all type of treatment. Legal medical marijuana is a great option for these and other patients in order to finally get relief from what their body is putting them through.

Three Issues Chiropractic Care Can Help With

You probably are not aware of what types of ailments chiropractic care can benefit. Whether you or a loved one is suffering from an ongoing injury or a recent sprain from an accident, chiropractic treatments may offer relief. Some people think that back pain is the only condition treated by a chiropractor, but that is incorrect because chiropractic care can be used to treat various conditions. These three conditions may be treated by your local chiropractic office.

Injury pain
Whether it’s a work injury or sports injury, you want to find relief using natural treatments. Physical therapy in Valrico FL can possibly help to loosen muscles that are impacted. Massage therapy is also another type of treatment used for injury pain. Getting regular chiropractic treatments after a sports injury can promote a quicker recovery and ultimately improve your performance.

Auto accidents
Depending on the severity of the auto accident, drivers can endure crippling pain from their injuries. Patients may experience the pain right after the accident or several days after the incident. Oftentimes, ligaments can be stretched, damaged or even torn. Various modes of healing can be used to treat the pain including mechanical traction, craniosacral techniques, physical therapy, massage therapy and lightforce laser therapy. These treatments are in addition to adjusting techniques.

Neck and shoulder pain
Loved ones of all ages can experience neck and should pain. When this occurs it can prevent you from performing normal day-to-day activities. Chiropractic treatments may help to alleviate neck and shoulder pain. The culprit of neck pain can be a herniated disc, bulging disc, muscle strain, pinched nerve or worn joints. Injuries can cause limited mobility and possibly lead to damages to the surrounding tissues or nerves.

When you or a loved one experiences pain related to a work or sport injury you probably did not think that your local chiropractor can offer relief. Most people are not sure which ailments are treated by a chiropractor. Essentially, consider seeing a chiropractor for these three ailments: injury pain, auto accident injuries, neck and should pain.

3 Cosmetic Surgery Preparation Tips

Undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure is not something that should be taken lightly. How healthy you are before the surgery matters. Even though you are not going in because you are getting a vital organ replaced, anytime your body is operated on, it experiences stress. How well you body handles that stress determines how easily you will recuperate. Your surgeon, like those at plastic surgeon raleigh nc, will be able to more accurately evaluate your current state. They will also be able to better guide you through the dos and don’ts during the weeks leading up to your procedure.

In the meantime, here are three cosmetic surgery preparation tips to consider.

Diet

Maintaining a balanced and healthy-diet is a good rule of thumb, even if you are not going to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure. In the weeks before your operation, you will be asked to place more focus on your diet. You may be asked to reduce your sodium intake, increase your consumption of fresh produce and drink enough water. High protein meals, fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals that help your body heal itself, so be sure to eat enough of each.

Medications

Your surgeon will make a list of any medications you are currently taking to determine if any could cause negative effects during your procedure. You may be asked to stop taking some and start consuming others. Since the recovery process usually involves some pain and discomfort, your surgeon may ask you to fill your post-surgery prescriptions prior to your appointment. During the weeks and days before, you may also be prescribed other medications to help with post-procedure bruising and discomfort.

Lifestyle

Leading a healthy lifestyle, even if you do not plan to undergo a cosmetic procedure, is a good rule of thumb. If you are a smoker, drinker or consume recreational drugs, you should be honest with your surgeon about your use. Toxins and the lingering effects of alcohol and drugs can cause negative consequences during a surgery, so you will most likely be asked to stop consuming them weeks before your appointment.

A cosmetic surgery can lift a person’s self-esteem, help a person regain their confidence or present a newfound appreciation for life. Before your appointment, preparation is vital. Your surgeon may ask you to be more mindful of your diet, medications and lifestyle in the weeks before.

What Should I Do To Overcome Drug Addiction?

Dealing with a drug addiction can be incredibly difficult. This is the case for many reasons, including the fact that substance abuse can isolate users from their friends and family members. Additionally, drug addiction can compromise performance in work and school. In some cases, substance abuse will also lead to a dangerous lifestyle while increasing the likelihood that the individual experiences trouble with the law. However, individuals who are interested in leading a more productive, positive life should know that they can. Below you will find just four of many strategies you can deploy to get on the road to a healthier, happier way of life:

  1. Find The Ideal Recovery Facility.

Your first step in recovery is finding the ideal drug treatment center in which to attain professional services from licensed experts. This step is important and inalienable because the general populace does not possess the knowledge and experience to complete recovery steps in isolation. For example, a recovery step such as detoxification can engender a wide range of withdrawal symptoms. Some examples would include constipation, headache, and rapid heart beat. These physiological changes can be mentally and physically overwhelming, and they can lead a recovering addict to fall into despair and return to the world of substance abuse. This is just one of many reasons that each aspect of the recovery process must be completed under the care and supervision of a trained team of experts. One treatment facility you might consider when you’re ready to find the right Port Saint Lucie Rehab is the Dream Center For Recovery.

  1. Obtain More Information About Drug Addiction.

In addition to ensuring that your treatment process transpires under the care and instruction of trained professionals, make sure that you take the time to learn more about drug addiction and recovery. Doing so will provide you with the knowledge and resources necessary to overcome various challenges and obstacles that may surface as you move beyond substance abuse and into a state of health and happiness. One article you may find particularly helpful is Failure and Success in Recovery. This article provides readers with information regarding how to grapple with failure on the road to recovery.

  1. Exercise Regularly.

Exercising is essential if you’re serious about complete recovery from drug addiction. This is the case for many reasons, including the fact that the ongoing use of illicit substances can have a profoundly negative impact on your mind and body. For example, drug use can hamper metabolism, weaken immunity, and cause unwanted weight loss or weight gain. Yet consistently engaging in exercise can help reverse these degenerative processes.

When you start thinking about how to become a more active person, remember that you have a wide range of options. Here are just a few forms of exercise that you might want to consider engaging in:

  • yoga
  • basketball
  • pilates
  • weight-lifting
  • tae-bo
  • running
  • cycling

You may also want to consider the value of working with a personal trainer. Another option is finding a walking buddy.

  1. Optimize Your Diet.

Another strategy you can deploy to help facilitate the drug recovery process is optimizing your diet. This approach is incredibly empowering because eating nutritionally dense foods can help reverse much of the damage caused by the regular use of illicit substances. If you lack information regarding how to optimize your diet, you may want to consider the value of hiring a nutritionist. Also note that many drug treatment facilities employ nutritionists or offer nutritional programs that will provide you with guidance regarding how to eat in a manner that promotes health. With this idea in mind, you may want to consider the value of searching for a treatment facility where these resources are available.

Another strategy you can use to facilitate the diet optimization process is using online food journals. An example would be www.cronometer.com. This online resource enables you to record all of the food you eat each day and then determine things like how many calories you consumed as well as what your carb/protein/fat ratios were.

Don’t Delay: Pursue Health And Wholeness Today!

If you’re serious about moving beyond the world of drug addiction and leading a healthy life, know that you can make it happen. Use some or all of the techniques outlined above to ensure that you begin to lead the life of wellness and wholeness that you deserve!

The Underlying Connection Between Childhood Trauma and Addiction

Childhood is generally a time of discovery, innocence and happiness. Despite these typical experiences, a growing individual’s life can be instantly shattered by a traumatic event and fall victim to lasting psychological damage. In some cases, survivors of trauma may turn to drug or alcohol use in order to cope with the pain.

The toll of trauma

Experiencing trauma at any age can cause complex consequences to a person’s thoughts, emotions and behaviors, but childhood is an especially sensitive period. When a child witnesses or is victimized by a traumatic event, the incident can have extensive and lifelong impacts on the developing brain. Potential effects can be emotional, relational or physical, including:

  • Increased anxiety
  • Feelings of helplessness, powerlessness and hopelessness
  • Sadness and grief
  • Feelings of self blame, guilt and shame
  • An inability to trust others
  • Lower self-esteem
  • An increased risk of chronic health conditions including fibromyalgia, diabetes, headaches, cardiovascular disease, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome
  • A higher likelihood of co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and self-harming behaviors

How trauma leads to addiction

Recent studies have shown that a neurological connection may exist between childhood trauma and substance abuse. The amygdala, the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex are all involved in the body’s response to trauma. These three areas of the brain control threat perception (amygdala), processing memories (hippocampus) and executive control (prefrontal cortex).

When these areas of the brain are overactive, such as following a traumatic experience, an individual can become extremely overwhelmed with everyday life and societal challenges. Furthermore, a person may desire to escape these negative feelings and begin self-medicating through drugs and alcohol as they grow older.

Tips for handling trauma triggers

A trauma survivor may develop a number of triggers that can lead to abusive and addictive behaviors. In order to prevent this from happening, experts recommend the following strategies:

  • Surround yourself with support when overwhelming memories begin entering your thoughts
  • Engage in exercise, volunteering and positive activities that release soothing endorphins and other mood lifting chemicals within the body
  • Work with a therapist to accept what elements of life you cannot control or predict
  • Learn how to systematically dial down the intensity of your emotions through breathing and other meditative exercises
  • Begin picking apart your negative feelings and actions. Trace these responses to the thoughts that cause them and address their irrationalities

In the case of dealing with trauma, both treatment and recovery are possible. When treating an addicted individual who is also a survivor of childhood trauma, it is very important to follow a holistic approach where the addiction and anxiety are confronted equally. While detoxification programs address more immediate concerns, these services are not be equipped to handle the lasting mental health needs that result from serious trauma.

On the other hand, specialized residential treatment centers can handle these psychological needs as well as the side effects of drug or alcohol withdrawal. Survivors and their support systems must look for behavioral health care providers that offer detox and continuing care services for managing trauma-related illnesses.

What are the functions of Child Psychologists? How can they lead to your Child’s Development?

Psychologists are the people who study your behavior, reasons, outlook adding together to the inner views and assist them to get over or command particular psychological issues. A child psychologist has to deal with critical cases also, related to the child’s emotional and metaphysical development, often dealing with the problems associated with differently-abled children, and also with those children who show attitude and personality disorders.

Child psychologists are experts that use their knowledge to counsel, and evaluate human behavior to help a child and middle aged teens to cope with their issues and develop into successful and adjustable adults.

  • The primary role of child psychologist is to understand why the child behaves in a particular manner, which is a diversion from the normal human behavior in the society. The clinical psychologist develops techniques related to studying the historical background of the child, so that he can frame remedial measures for the development of the child’s mind.

When it comes to crafting a better, optimistic world for children, child psychologists play many vital roles, like –

  • Studying behavior to give a clear picture of a child’s wants
  • Analyzing and treating psychological conditions
  • Trying to be an adviser to parents, teachers, and caretakers
  • Offering supportive counseling to children who are going through a lot of stress or disturbance

Generally, child psychologists work for children who are going through life changing experiences like trauma, abuse, family issues, bullying, learning disabilities, and addiction.

What is the Role of a Child Psychologist?

Assessment – Their routine duties comprise evaluation and treatment suggestions for children and grown teens. The analytical process generally revolves around a number of tests based on mental ability over and above consultation sessions with the child, his or her parents and others who are close to the child. The psychologist eventually should find out if the kid has psychological health issues noteworthy enough to fit the norms for the treatment. Depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and other stuff abuse are few widespread child disorders that child psychologists encounter daily.

How the Treatment is Conducted?

  • The child psychologist’s treatment differs according to the child’s situation. Many psychologists make suggestions on behavior adjustment plans. This comprises schooling on basic skill to deal with emotional disputes, psychiatric therapy or counseling and rehab or prescription in severe cases.
  • Whereas many child psychologists oversee the healing phase and directly provide therapy meetings. And few, especially those who mostly work in hospitals or private clinics, generally refer children to psychiatrists, outpatient or inpatient services or other psychology community resources.
  • The child psychologist devises a remedial action based on complete parental and community support, encouraging the child’s potential capacity and rectifying the wrongs that the child was prone to do. This the child psychologist does with the knowledge of the subject, and with his or her practical experience.

How can a Child go Astray?

  • Abuse – There are few cases where the child psychologists have to deal with circumstances where the child is abused. If the child is abused by one or more parents, the psychologist can suggest the local child services organizations to simply remove the child from the home. And if the child gets violent and poses any sort of danger to its loved ones especially the siblings because of the abuse, the psychologist treating the child can recommend different living arrangements for the child.
  • Custody – Another common, but not so frequent role of the child psychologist is to provide advice in matter of custody. The psychologist generally meets the child, his/her parents and other family members who are well aware of the home dynamics.

A child psychologist works in close collaboration with the child’s family members, and he or she must be compassionate to listen to the child’s complaints and also understand about the child’s mental world.

Cosmetic And Medical Uses For Botox

Botox injections tend to get a bad rap, mostly from examples of misuse and overuse depicted in the media, such as the pictures of starlets and Real Housewives with frozen, expressionless faces. The other issue is that the main ingredient in the Botulinum toxin, which is one of the most poisonous substances known to man.

The truth is that, although Botox is derived from a poison, the injections use incredibly small amounts of the substance. Additionally, the drug has been proven effective in treating several medical conditions including strabismus (crossed eyes), chronic migraine, and cervical dystonia (excessive tightness in the neck and shoulder muscles). Botox is also used to treat fibromyalgia and can even be used in conjunction with natural remedies.

When used properly, as a cosmetic procedure, Botox treatment can reduce the appearance of frown line and worry lines in your forehead, between your eyebrows, and in the corner of your mouth and eyes.

How Botox Works

The Botox treatment works by preventing nerve impulses from reaching the muscles. When injected directly into muscle tissue it prevents the muscle from contracting.

Botox as a Disease Treatment

Strabismus and cervical dystonia are both caused by imbalances in the way muscles contract. When the imbalance occurs in the eyes, one eye may not move in tandem with the other causing the eyes to cross. One eye could also lag, or not move at all – remaining locked in place because the muscles contract but don’t release properly. Read more…
