Living In Peace At Home

There’s nothing like staying at home when you’re older and being able to live out the remaining years of your life surrounded by a familiar environment and family. Assisted living at home services allow for older family members to stay out of nursing homes and other facilities. This is an option that can save the family money and that can prove comforting to those who don’t want to live in a single room. It’s also an option to consider if you or someone you know has had surgery or is disabled and unable to get out of the house and doesn’t want to leave the home.

Before hiring someone to provide the services that your family member needs, meet with them to see how they interact together. Most caregivers enjoy spending time with people in their homes. They can talk to the person in the home and keep them occupied instead of simply sitting in the home all day. Caregivers are often screened before they are hired by the company. The screening can offer assurance that you’re letting someone trustworthy enter the home. Each caregiver often understands that families have unique needs. One person might need help bathing and getting out of bed while another person might need someone to help with simple tasks around the home, like cooking or washing clothes.

You can hire someone to stay with your family member on a daily basis or hire someone to only stay during the daytime hours. A nurse will often assess the needs of the person before determining how often someone is needed to provide assistance in the home. Caregivers can help with running errands and getting the person to doctor’s appointments or other appointments that are made. The caregiver can also report back to the doctor about health issues that are seen that might need to be examined further. Assisted living services in the home make it easier for other family members to enjoy time with their loved one instead of feeling like a nurse. It also offers time so that you can take care of your own family as well.

Got Allergies? Here’s How You Can Take Back Control

Allergies can make you feel like a victim susceptible to everything in the atmosphere. From bad weather to pet dander and food, even one allergy can make your life seem miserable if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That doesn’t mean you have to suffer with allergies indefinitely. After all, there are some things you can do on your own to find relief and take your life back. There’s no reason to suffer when you have so many options for living a life free of allergy symptoms.

Visit Your Doctor

Many people suffer from what they believe to be seasonal allergies or food allergies to certain things that they eat. While some anecdotal evidence regarding what you’re allergic to can be helpful, the fact is that you need to be sure about what’s bothering you if you’re ever going to fix it.

Start by going to a doctor that offers a blood test for allergies Hunterdon County NJ residents like your friends and neighbors will recommend. They’ll ask about what bothers you, but they also have sophisticated methods to figure out what you’re really allergic to.

Armed with that information, it can be a lot easier to avoid your allergens whether they are food, pollen, dust, dander or something else.

Consider OTC Medication

Over the counter medication for allergies (OTC medication) is readily available and cost-effective for most people that have allergies. As little as $1 per day can help you keep your allergies under control.

Before taking OTC allergy control medication for a long period of time, talk to your doctor about your specific needs and how they recommend you use the medication. Some people may benefit from taking it on a regular schedule, while others may need to only take it when they notice their allergies acting up and causing them problems.

Your doctor will know best which option is right for you. They’ll likely also be able to recommend an effective brand or product for your specific allergy needs.

Change Your Lifestyle

Not all allergies can be controlled by changing your lifestyle. If you’re allergic to pollen for example, you can’t very well stay inside all spring. Other allergies may respond well to a change in activity.

Regular cleaning and washing of sheets and blankets can help with pet dander. Cooking at home more can help you control food allergies. Simple things can really go a long way when it comes to beating allergies.

Facing Opioid’s Deadly Grip

My daughter’s addition was really causing me lots of sleepless nights.  I didn’t call it that at first.  I bought her story that she was just suffering from the lingering effects of the injuries she had suffered when she broke her collarbone, and arm in a terrible car accident.  She said she still needed relief and that I shouldn’t worry.  She just needed a little more money so she could get something to help her sleep. I struggled with helping her and not enabling her.  Then I got the call I feared most.  She had overdosed.

Now those nightly news reports of the staggering number of deaths in the U.S. hit home.  It wasn’t just “those people” anymore – suddenly, it was me.  Us. My solidly middle-class life was turned upside down.  There was one consolation – she was alive, but just barely, and had been air-lifted to a town nearby.  I just had to get to her.

Fortunately, I had used a Groupon for a vacation to the Bahamas and knew I could shop the site to find a place to stay.  And sure enough, there was a Groupon deal for Extended Stay Hotels that I could use right away.  The easy to use Groupon and the caring and supportive customer service I received from Extended Stay made the difficult trip so much easier.

It was a relief to finally get to the hospital and see her.  Once that was over, I returned to my room and made a quick meal.  I found comfort in being able to cook and eat what I needed to nourish me.  I even found washing the dishes soothing.  And the room had everything I needed to get back to work on the proposal I had to submit in a few days.

America is going through a drug crises and facing a record number of overdoses this year.  Many of these overdoses are from the abuse of opioids, a powerful painkiller.  Research shows that many people become dependent on the pills after being subscribed them after surgery.  Some can’t stomach the medicinal effects and stop using opioids as quickly as possible.   Others continue using them because of the euphoria they feel.   As the person seeks the high, their body starts to tolerate the dosage and they need more and more to achieve that same euphoric feeling.  Unfortunately, my daughter was one of those who chased the high.

If was a difficult period, but she made it through.  Her near death experience has changed her determination to beat the disease.  And I’m learning the boundaries I need to respect.  Together, we’ll see this through.

Causes of Thiamin Deficiency

ID-10020284Most common cause of deficiency of thiamin (vitamin B1) is poor dietary intake of thiamin. The cause of deficiency of thiamin is different in different countries. Depending on the local customs and traditions the cause of thiamin deficiency is different in different geographical areas (different in different regions of a country).

In most of the developed western countries the causes of deficiency of thiamin are alcoholism and chronic illness like cancer. Alcohol directly interferes with the absorption of thiamin and also with formation of thiamin pyrophosphate. Thiamin should always be replenished when re-feeding a patient with alcoholism. Carbohydrate repletion in a patient with alcoholism without adequate thiamine can precipitate acute thiamine deficiency (because the thiamin present will be utilized for metabolism of carbohydrate). Pregnant women with prolonged hyperemesis gravidarum (excess vomiting during pregnancy) and anorexia can also develop thiamin deficiency.  Patients with an overall poor nutritional status (parenteral glucose), and patients on chronic diuretic therapy due to increased urinary thiamine losses are at risk of developing of thiamin deficiency. Maternal thiamine deficiency can lead to infantile deficiency (infantile beriberi) in breastfed children. Thiamine deficiency should also be considered in the setting of motor vehicle accidents associated with head injury. Read more…

Four Common Problems During Breast Feeding

ID-100172969Many problems may arise while breast feeding. Some of the problems that arise during breast feeding are technical (due to faulty technique of breast feeding, which may be due to some customs, traditions and taboos) and some of the problems are due to medical reasons. The common medical problems that may arise during breast feeding are mastitis (which is inflammation of the breast tissue), cracked nipples, inverted nipples or general health conditions like fever.

  1. Mastitis: It is inflammation of breast tissue, which is generally due to infection and is characterized by swelling, redness and pain in the breast. This should be treated with appropriate antibiotics. General physician should be consulted for treatment.
  2. Cracked nipples: This may arise due to improper and faulty techniques of breastfeeding, which causes soreness of nipples. The treatment of soreness of nipples due to cracking of nipples is keeping the nipples dry and warm, and regular washing with plain water. Nipples should not be washed with soap. Only medical grade and high quality lanolin should be used for drying and covering the nipples and other than human (self) milk nothing should touch the nipples. Instead of doing good the use of creams and lotions may actually harm and make the problem worse. Read more…
