Cannabidiol CBD Oil for Dog- All You Need to Know

Medical marijuana doesn’t have to get you high. In fact, one of the popular reasons medical marijuana is gaining such attraction is because there exist strains that barely get the patient high, but still gives the various therapeutic effects associated with marijuana. This has given many a way to function throughout the day and has been a lifesaver for children. Because of this many are wondering if they can give their pets medical marijuana too.

This is why you’ve probably heard a lot about CBD oil lately because it’s a legal way to take advantage of marijuana’s medicinal benefits without getting high and it’s safe to give to your pets.

CBD Oil is Not Marijuana

If you know a little bit about marijuana, then you’ve probably heard about THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). This is the most well-known compound in cannabis because it’s the cannabinoid that gets you stoned, and recreational marijuana is bred to be high in it. Unfortunately, for our pups, THC is toxic to them in very high amounts – sorry puppers.

But there are a lot of cannabinoids in marijuana that provide therapeutic benefits but don’t alter the mind causing a high, as well they’re not toxic for our pets. The most well-known and important of these cannabinoids is CBD (cannabidiol).

If only there was a way to create a plant that has no THC but still has all the other cannabinoids that work together to create a symphony of medical benefits. Oh, wait there is, and it’s called hemp. Hemp is legally required to contain less than 0.03% THC. This essentially means THC is non-existent in hemp allowing it be legal across the United States and much of the world.

How CBD Works

CBD works in two ways in our pets bodies, in fact, CBD works in the same way for all mammals. First, it influences cannabinoids that are naturally created in the body called endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids attach to two main receptors called CB1 which is most commonly found in the brain, and CB2 which is found throughout the rest of the body, especially in the immune system.

CBD mainly influences endocannabinoids to act on CB2 receptors, which plays a vital role in regulating proper immune system response, among other systems within the body. This gives CBD the ability to provide numerous medical benefits.

Furthermore, CBD will directly attach to a few other receptors, notably serotonin 1A receptors leading to an even wider therapeutic range of benefits that include: relief from anxiety, depression, opioid dependence, and nausea and vomiting to name a few.

The most notable side effect is CBD may cause inhibition of hepatic drug metabolism by inhibiting cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver which metabolize many pharmaceutical drugs. This has only been seen when taking CBD in high doses.

To a lesser extent, you’re pup may experience slight dry mouth as CB1 and CB2 receptors are found in the glands that produce saliva. When high doses of CBD first enter into the system they may experience a slight drop in blood pressure as well, but this is fairly uncommon and rarely causes any issues.
